Mumbai's Newest Recruit - Djelaludin Sharityar

Here is all you need to know about Mumbai's newest foreign signing, Afghan centre-back Djelaluddin Sharityar.

Djelaludin "Toto" Sharityar is an Afghan central defender and was formerly the captain of the Afghanistan national football team with 48 international caps and a goal to his credit. Djelaludin is an experienced campaigner having played for almost a decade for the Afghan National Team. He was part of the 2011 SAFF Championship held in India where he led the Afghan team to the final, where they fell short against the hosts India.


Djelaludin was born in Afghanistan but his family moved to Germany when he was at a young age of 7. He took to football at an young age and joined the youth academy of Bundesliga side VFL Wolfsburg. After playing for the Wolfsburg youth sides, Djelaludin moved on to Swiss club FC Kreuzlingen in 2001. 

He then moved back to Germany in 2003 when he joined FC Konstanz, and then FC Emmendingen in 2006, SpVgg Weiden in 2007 and 2008, 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 in 2009. His Germany football stint ended and then he moved on to Cyprus where he joined APEP Pitsilia in 2009 and then Ethnikos Achhna in 2011 in the Cypriot First Division. 

He moved to Bahrain where he played for Hidd SCC in Bahrain. In 2014, he returned to Germany to play for 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 again. In 2015, Sharityar signed a contract with Manama Club , a top club that plays in the Bahraini Premier League.

Djelaludin is a well travelled player and his vast experience will surely provide gaffer Santosh Kashyap with a formidable option in the defense as well as a defensive midfielder. 

He has been given the nickname "The Lion of Afghanistan" and Mumbai fans will hope he will stay true to his name and become "The Lion of Mumbai" too.

Mumbai host Mohun Bagan on the 15th of January at our home Cooperage Football Stadium at Churchgate.
